Choosing the right collar is one of the first decisions to make when taking a new dog home – and also one of the most important. Dog collars and dog harnesses are both essential tools for everything from dog training sessions to great outdoor adventures to regular daily walks.
Dog collars offer control, convenience and safety, allowing you to teach your pet simple commands and displaying his ID details if his curiosity leads him to wander a little bit far. They can also make a fashion statement, showing off your excellent taste and wicked sense of style.
But much like the pups who wear them, dog collars are all unique and come in many different colours, shapes and sizes. It’s important to choose the right one so your dog can stay relaxed, comfortable and happy during your quality time together.
Arctic Sammy builds products that prove it’s possible to bring dogs anywhere, from a day out in town to a camping trip in the mountains. Our collars and dog accessories are sturdy, reliable and built to last. Here’s what we recommend you look for when you go collar shopping.
Why dog collars are so important
Why does your dog need a collar? As it turns out, there are many reasons why collars are such an essential part of any pup’s wardrobe including:
Identification
A collar is the best possible place to hang your dog’s ID tag, with his name, his medical information and your contact details. If he gets lost, this information can save his life and eliminate a lot of hassle for you.
Convenience
Compared to dog harnesses, collars are easier to slip on and take off again – ideal if you’re in a hurry!
Training
As training tools, the combination of a good collar and leash is all you need to teach your dog anything from simple commands to spot on obedience skills.
Safety
When you’re walking your dog through crowded areas or busy parts of town, collars are less likely to get tangled or caught on objects.
Finding the right size and fit
It’s important to choose a collar your dog will feel comfortable wearing. If you have a puppy, check his collar fit weekly as his neck size will increase as he grows. Collars that are too loose can slip off and ones that are too tight dig uncomfortably into your dog’s neck. The golden rule is being able to comfortably place one to two fingers between your puppy's neck and the collar.
Choosing the right material
Dog collars come in a range of materials, from leather and faux leather to neoprene and nylon. These materials vary in how durable, comfortable and affordable they are. When you find a collar that’s comfortable for your dog to wear and will last you a long time, it’s a best-case scenario. It’s also best to prioritise material that’s easy to care for.
Types of dog collars
There are a ton of specialised collars out there: flat collars, martingale collars, show collars, bark control collars and so many more. Yet for most pups, a standard regular, Martingale or tactical collar will do. These collars are practical, widely available and come in enough varieties to please any dog lover!
Regular / flat collars
The most common type of collar on the market, regular or “flat” collars are simple in design, easy to adjust and easy to take on and off. They’re typically made up of a simple strap secured with a belt buckle or plastic snap closure, a ring for ID and another metal ring to attach the dog’s lead to. Flat collars are ideal for dogs that won’t try and slip out of them.
Martingale
A Martingale collar comes with two loops: a larger one that goes around your dog’s neck and a smaller one that attaches to his leash. When you apply a light tension, the leash tightens and stops him from slipping away. Martingale leashes are perfect for dogs that are prone to trying to escape from regular collars.
Tactical
Tactical collars are made from high-grade materials like neoprene and military-grade nylon, and often come triple-stitched. Wider than standard collars, with additional loops, they provide an unbeatable level of security for strong and stubborn pooches.
