Dog Harnesses: What to Look For

The Best Activities For Dog Harnesses Reading Dog Harnesses: What to Look For 5 minutes

A dog harness is more comfortable for your pup than a collar alone, and it can give you a greater sense of control too. You just have to find the right harness. Choosing a quality harness is essential for your dog’s comfort and safety. Yet with so many different types of dog harnesses out there to choose from, how do you know what to look for?

Arctic Sammy’s dog harnesses are one of our most popular dog accessories. And when you buy a harness and one of our dog collars at the same time, you’re well on your way to being all prepared for a rainforest trek, mountain hike, visit to the beach or camping trip with your best friend!

While dog collars definitely have their perks – they’re convenient and great for training – harnesses are essential items for all dog owners and their furry friends. They help to prevent accidents by attaching themselves more securely to your dog’s body, and prevent strain to your dog’s neck and joints – perfect for when you’re taking long walks and epic adventures together.

Dog harnesses come in a variety of styles, colours and materials, making it easy to find one that suits your pet’s personality. But if you want a dependable harness that you and your dog will both love, here are the top traits to look for.

Comfortable

First and foremost, you need a harness that your dog will feel comfortable in. This is an especially high priority if you plan to do long or strenuous activities together like mountain hikes or trail runs. But even if you’re just taking your daily walk down the block, the last thing you want is a harness that will chafe or rub on your dog’s skin. Choose softer materials that are gentle on the skin and the right fit of harness, and don’t be tempted to sacrifice comfort for a lower price.

The right fit

A harness should fit snugly but not tightly, allowing for 1-2 finger’s width between the harness and your dog’s skin. To get an idea of the right size, measure your dog’s neck and girth. Use a soft measuring tape to measure around the widest part of his ribcage and his neck.

Designed for freedom of movement

A good harness lets your dog walk, run and generally move around freely and with no restrictions. For this, any pressure should be spread evenly across the chest and your dog should have free shoulder movement. Choose a harness that makes freedom of movement a design priority.

Made from durable materials

Your dog’s harness should be made from material that’s not only comfy, but strong too. It should be sturdy enough to survive both your pet pulling on it and the natural wear and tear of time as well. Some popular choices are nylon, neoprene, leather and mesh fabric. Some desirable qualities to look for in harness material include being water-resistant, lightweight, easy on your dog’s skin and easy to clean.

Practical

Dog harnesses should make life easier for you and your dog. If you have your eye on a particular harness, check that it’s easy to take on and off. Is it appropriate for both summer and winter, or will it be too hot on a sunny day? You’ll also want a harness that’s easy to clean, e.g. machine-washable.

What kind of clip does your harness have?

Dog harnesses usually fall into one of three different categories depending on the location of the clip that attaches to the leash. Front-clip harnesses are great for dogs that tend to pull or lunge. Back-clip harnesses allow more obedient dogs to have more freedom of movement. Dual-clip harnesses give you the best of both worlds and you can adjust them for the situation and for your dog’s behaviour.
